Campus Sexual Assault: Preparing for the Title IX Tidal Wave
The legal terrain of Title IX in the context of college campus sexual assault is complex and developing rapidly. Students, parents, and administrators all face new challenges as the issue gains increased public attention. The program will frame key elements and trends in this evolving area of law.
You will learn:
- About Title IX requirements of colleges and universities with respect to campus sexual assault
- About the limitations on due process in college disciplinary proceedings for both complainants and accused
- About the interplay between Title IX, college disciplinary processes, and criminal proceedings
- Post-college disciplinary process remedies for both the accused and survivors, including OCR complaints and civil lawsuits
Felice Duffy, Duffy Law LLC, New Haven
Attorney Felice Duffy is a former Federal Prosecutor who practices criminal and civil rights law with an emphasis on Title IX actions, representation of college students accused of serious conduct code violations, and white collar criminal defense. As an undergraduate, she filed an action against UCONN under the then-new Title IX statute to compel the creation of its women’s varsity soccer program and went on to be selected to the first Women’s U.S. National Soccer Team. She then served as head coach of the Yale women’s soccer team for a decade while simultaneously earning her Ph.D. in Education/Sports Psychology from UCONN before attending law school.
Anne Mahoney, Judicial District, Hartford
Attorney Mahoney is a Senior Assistant State’s Attorney in the Hartford Judicial District prosecuting major felonies. She began her legal career as a member of the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. She has tried more than 50 jury trials to verdict and received the Connecticut Criminal Justice Educational and Charitable Association’s Prosecutor of the Year award in 2006 and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center Visionary Award in 2013. For more than 15 years Anne was a member of the Hartford Child Abuse Multidisciplinary Team and is currently Chief State’s Attorney Kevin Kane’s designee to the Child Fatality Review Panel.
